Animal Crossing: New Horizons was, undoubtedly, always going to move a lot of units.
However, the sheer scale of New Horizons‘ sales figures is truly something to behold. Despite launching the same day as Bethesda’s cross-platform Doom: Eternal, New Horizons managed to sell triple the number of physical copies.
In fact, New Horizons is Nintendo Switch’s second-biggest launch ever, behind only Pokémon Sword/Shield. The notable exception here is that both editions of Pokémon are counted as one entity.
However, if you treat them as two separate games, New Horizons is actually the best-selling Nintendo Switch release.
GamesIndustry.biz even noted how New Horizons managed to achieve a near-impossibility: it sold more copies than all other Animal Crossing games combined.
Again, this is only taking physical sales into consideration. The story might be different in terms of digital sales – especially for Doom Eternal.
