Amazon unveils cloud gaming service ‘Luna’

Online retail behemoth Amazon has unveiled their new cloud gaming service ‘Luna’

Luna will run off the back of Amazon’s own web services, which will run on PC, Mac, Fire TV, and via web apps for iPad and iPhone, with Android compatibility being announced at a later date. You’ll be able to play on two devices simultaneously.

Amazon will offer subscriptions to ‘game channels’ to access games. Ubisoft has announced that they will have their own channel on the service, where users can access their back catalogue and new releases such as Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla for a ‘small subscription fee’.

Luna will also link up with Twitch (which Amazon also owns) which will make streaming easier, plus if you are watching a streamer who is using Luna, and you’re a Luna subscriber, you’ll be able to instantly play the game that the streamer is playing

On top of that Amazon are promising Alexa integration for the service, which may tempt developers to try the service. This might end up making players use their own voice to answer NPC’s questions.

Amazon also unveiled a Luna controller which will connect to the service for ‘seamless’ gameplay’ rather than use a standard Bluetooth controller. The controller itself will cost $49.99 (no UK price at this moment).

Amazon is offering early access to the U.S only (but not to its territories, Alaska or Hawaii… sorry) at the moment at a cost of $5.99 a month (This is early access price, so it may go up or down on release), which is cheaper than Google’s Stadia and Microsoft’s xCloud.

Luna Device Compatibility:
  • PC (requires Windows 10 with support for DirectX 11)
  • Mac (OSX 10.13+)
  • FireTV devices (Fire TV Stick – 2nd gen, Fire TV Stick 4K, or Fire TV Cube – 2nd gen)
  • Chrome web browser (version 83+) for PC and Mac
  • Safari web browser (iOS14) for iPhone and iPad

You can check out all the info, plus request an invitation for access here. Amazon have not said when the service will launch, nor when the invites will be delivered.
